If you're getting connected to fibre, you might be wondering whether you can use your own NTD or ONT. Here’s what those devices do, and why Rural Fibre Co provides them for you.
What’s an NTD/ONT?
The NTD (Network Termination Device) or ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is the device that connects your fibre line to your home network.
With Splice, this is an all-in-one unit supplied by Rural Fibre Co that includes:
The fibre termination point (NTD/ONT)
A built-in ONU (Optical Network Unit)
A full-featured WiFi router
This means a single device handles everything—from converting the fibre signal to managing your home network and WiFi. It's the gateway between the fibre outside and your internet setup inside, with no extra hardware needed.
Can I supply my own?
No. Customers must use the Rural Fibre Co–supplied NTD/ONT, typically a Nokia unit. These devices are professionally installed, securely registered to the network, and configured to meet carrier standards.
Using third-party equipment is not supported, and may prevent your service from being activated. For safety, compatibility, and support reasons, only equipment installed by Rural Fibre Co can be used.
What’s provided and where it goes
During installation, a qualified technician will supply and install the NTD/ONT. It’s usually mounted on an internal wall near a power outlet, in a location where you can easily connect your own devices via Ethernet or WiFi.
The unit remains the property of Rural Fibre Co (not the homeowner or tenant), and must not be removed, relocated, or replaced without approval.
