Understanding our fibre technology – GPON explained

Updated over 3 weeks ago

You might have seen the term GPON when reading about your fibre connection. Here’s a simple breakdown of what it means, how it works, and why Rural Fibre Co uses it for your internet service.

What is GPON?

GPON stands for Gigabit Passive Optical Network. It is a type of fibre network architecture used to deliver high-speed internet by sharing a single fibre connection with multiple homes or premises.

Unlike older copper networks or point-to-point fibre, GPON is designed to be more efficient and scalable by using a passive system that does not require powered equipment between the exchange and your home.

How it works

GPON uses a shared fibre topology. Here's how it connects you:

  • A single fibre runs from the local exchange to a neighbourhood splitter

  • That splitter passively divides the signal between several premises

  • Each home or business has its own NTD/ONT (Network Termination Device / Optical Network Terminal) to convert the signal into usable internet

This setup allows multiple users to share the same fibre line while still enjoying fast, stable connections.

Benefits of GPON

GPON offers a number of advantages:

  • High speeds suitable for modern internet use, including streaming, video calls, and gaming

  • Efficient infrastructure with fewer active components between you and the network

  • Future-ready design that supports upgrades as demand increases

Why Rural Fibre Co uses it

Rural Fibre Co uses GPON because it is a proven, reliable, and cost-effective way to deliver fast fibre internet across regional areas.

It allows more households to be connected using a simpler setup, keeping rollout costs down while still delivering fast, reliable internet. A budget-friendly approach without compromising on quality.
