What devices work best with fibre connections?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

A fibre connection from Rural Fibre Co delivers high speeds and low latency – but the devices you use can impact how much of that performance you experience.

Smart TVs, gaming consoles, and modern laptops

Most current-generation devices are built to take advantage of high-speed fibre.

  • Smart TVs stream 4K and HDR content smoothly.

  • Gaming consoles like PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X handle online gaming with ultra-low latency.

  • Modern laptops support fast WiFi standards for quick downloads and seamless video calls.

Older devices

If you’re using older hardware, it may limit your speeds.

  • Devices without support for Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) may not be able to use your fibre plan’s full capacity.

  • Outdated network cards and slower processors can also affect performance.

NTD/ONT compatibility

  • All Splice Internet installations on the Rural Fibre Co network come with a Wi-Fi 6 router as standard which is built into the NTD/OND.

  • Wi-Fi 6 provides better speed, coverage, and handling of multiple devices compared to older WiFi versions.

  • Even with the best router, your device still needs to support a modern WiFi standard to get top speeds.

  • Depending on the size and density of your property, you may also have a WiFi extender beacon. These will extend the distance your network travels within your home.

Ethernet for priority devices

For the most stable and fastest possible connection:

  • Use an ethernet cable for high-priority devices like gaming consoles, TVs, desktop PCs, or work-from-home setups.

  • Wired connections eliminate WiFi interference and ensure you get the closest speed to your plan’s maximum.

Tip: If you’re upgrading your internet, it might be worth upgrading older devices at the same time to truly enjoy your fibre connection.
