What equipment do I need?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Getting connected to Splice Internet on the Rural Fibre Co network is easy because most of what you need comes with your installation. We supply the service and the gear to get you online and you just bring your own devices.

Understanding the NTD/ONT

  • NTD stands for Network Termination Device. You might've heard this before with your NBN connection.

  • ONT stands for Optical Network Terminal – it’s the same thing, just a different name and what Rural Fibre Co uses.

  • This NTD/ONT device is installed inside your home and is where the fibre network ends and your internet service begins.

  • All data from the Rural Fibre Co network flows through this device to your home network.

Modem/router requirements

When you connect via Rural Fibre Co, the modem/router is included inside your NTD/ONT.

  • You don’t need to buy your own – it comes free with your installation.

  • The included modem/router is already configured to work with your service, so you can start using the internet right away.

Supported Devices

To use the service, you'll need your own WiFi or Ethernet-enabled devices, such as a laptop, smartphone, tablet, smart TV, or gaming console. Most modern devices will work just fine. Older or budget models (especially entry-level phones, Chromebooks, or older smart TVs) can still connect, but may not support higher speeds.

What if the signal from the NTD/ONT isn’t strong enough?

If the Wi-Fi signal from your NTD/ONT doesn’t reach every corner of your home, you have options:

  • The Rural Fibre Co technicians can supply WiFi Extenders (beacons) during installation for a small fee.

  • You can also purchase extenders anytime through Splice - just reach out to the team and we'll get it sorted.

  • These devices boost coverage, helping you get a strong connection in more rooms.

Tip: Position your NTD/ONT in a central location where possible – this helps maximise WiFi coverage without extra equipment. The install team will always try their best to position your NTD/ONT in the best spot so if there is an area which is open plan with few thick walls, this might be a good spot to show them.
