How to improve your WiFi performance

Updated over 3 weeks ago

A strong fibre connection is only as good as your in-home WiFi. Here’s how to get the best possible coverage and speed.

Router placement

When your lead-in is installed, our technician will place your NDT/ONT (Optical Network Terminal), which also acts as your router, in the best possible location to maximise coverage.

  • Ideally, this is in a central, open spot in your home.

  • Avoid placing it inside cupboards or behind large furniture.

Avoiding interference

Certain objects and devices can weaken your WiFi signal, including:

  • Thick walls and metal surfaces.

  • Microwaves.

  • Baby monitors and cordless phones.

  • Large fish tanks 🐟 (yes, really – water blocks WiFi).

If possible, keep your NTD/ONT or WiFi extenders away from these sources of interference.

Extenders and mesh systems

If you have WiFi “dead zones” in your home:

  • WiFi extender beacons boost the signal into harder-to-reach areas.

  • Mesh systems (multiple beacons) provide consistent coverage across large or multi-storey homes.

You can purchase the right gear for your home directly through the Splice - reach out to the team and they can set you up.

Upgrading your modem/router

If your current hardware is underperforming, it may need replacing.

  • Contact our team if you think this is the case.

  • A technician will need to visit and install the replacement.

  • Because the NTD/ONT and modem/router are a combined device provided by Rural Fibre Co, off the shelf boxes may not do the trick.

Tip: Test your speed in different rooms. If the speed drops dramatically in certain spots, it’s a sign you may need an extender or mesh system.
