How to reboot your modem/router

Updated over 3 weeks ago

A simple reboot can often fix connection issues – here’s how to do it safely and when it’s most useful.

Safe restart instructions

  1. Power off your modem/router (NTD/ONT) using the switch on the back or by unplugging it from the wall.

  2. Wait until all the lights go out.

  3. Wait 30 seconds after the last light turns off – this clears temporary settings and resets the hardware.

  4. Power back on and wait 2–3 minutes for the lights to stabilise before testing your internet. You should see stable green lights once complete.

When to reboot

  • After a planned or unplanned outage.

  • If you notice slower than usual speeds.

  • After making changes to your NTD/ONT settings.

Avoid constant reboots

If you find yourself rebooting your NTD/ONT frequently (daily or more), it may be a sign of:

  • A hardware fault.

  • An intermittent network issue.

  • Problems with your in-home wiring or setup.

In these cases it's time to reach out to Splice Support so we can investigate and resolve the root cause. That may mean a visit from Rural Fibre Co's team and a new box for your house.

Remember: A reboot is different from a factory reset – a factory reset will erase all settings. If you’re unsure which to do, check with our team before holding down the reset button.
