If you're looking to fine-tune your connection, whether it’s for gaming, video calls, or advanced networking, this guide will help you access and manage your Nokia fibre modem/router supplied by Rural Fibre Co and supported by Splice.
Accessing your router
Your modem and router are built into a single Nokia device provided during installation.
You can manage its settings in two ways:
📱 Via the Nokia WiFi app
Download the app from the App Store or Google Play
Connect to your WiFi network
Log in using the admin details provided during installation
From here, you can manage WiFi names and passwords, check connected devices, and more
💻 Via your browser
Connect to the network
Open a browser and go to http://192.168.18.1
Log in with your admin username and password (found on the sticker on your device or provided at install)
QoS, VLAN tagging, MTU, and more
These advanced settings can help optimise your fibre connection:
QoS (Quality of Service)
QoS lets you prioritise certain types of traffic - like gaming, video calls, or streaming - so they run smoothly even when your network is busy. For example, you can give higher priority to work apps during the day and streaming services in the evening.
On most Nokia devices, QoS settings are basic and automatic, but you can tweak priorities in the app or web interface if needed.
VLAN Tagging
VLAN tagging helps your connection work correctly on the Rural Fibre Co network. These settings are already configured during setup and do not need to be changed.
Unless you are following specific instructions from our support team, it is best to leave them as they are. Changing VLAN settings without guidance can cause your internet to stop working.
MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit)
MTU sets the maximum size of data packets sent over your connection. The default MTU works fine for most users, but adjusting it can help resolve issues with some VPNs, online games, or older devices that struggle with large packets.
If you're troubleshooting unusual lag, connection drops, or VPN problems, our team can help you test MTU settings safely.
Port Forwarding / DMZ
Port forwarding allows devices outside your home network to access specific devices or services inside it—like a game console, home server, or security camera.
The DMZ setting sends all incoming traffic to one device, which can help with compatibility but increases security risks. Use it with caution.
For step-by-step setup instructions, see our port forwarding guide.
⚠️ Note: Adjust these settings with care. If you are unsure, check with our support team before making changes that might disrupt your connection.

If you're not sure which model you have, check the label on the back or bottom of your device.
Resetting vs reconfiguring
If something goes wrong, here’s what to know:
Reconfiguring means adjusting individual settings like WiFi names or QoS rules without disrupting your connection
Resetting restores your device to factory defaults. Use this only as a last resort. It may erase all settings and require help to reconnect
If you are unsure, contact us before resetting. We can often walk you through a safer solution.
