Port forwarding on your router

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Need to host a game server, access a device remotely, or run a service from home? You might need to set up port forwarding on your router. Here’s what it does, how to set it up on a Splice-supplied Nokia router, and how to keep things secure.

What it’s used for

Port forwarding lets external devices access services on your local network through your internet connection. Common uses include:

  • Online gaming that requires direct connections

  • Hosting a website or server from home

  • Remote access to a security camera, NAS device or desktop computer

  • Peer-to-peer applications like torrents or voice chat services

In simple terms, it opens a small door in your network that directs incoming traffic to the right device.

How to set it up (Nokia router)

If you're using a Nokia router supplied by Splice, here’s how to configure port forwarding:

  1. Open a browser and go to http://192.168.18.1

  2. Log in with your router credentials

    • Username: usually admin

    • Password: check the sticker on your router if unsure

  3. Navigate to the Port Forwarding section (sometimes under Advanced Settings or NAT)

  4. Click Add New Rule or similar

  5. Enter:

    • A name for the rule (e.g. “Minecraft Server”)

    • The external and internal port number

    • The protocol (TCP, UDP or both)

    • The internal IP address of the device you're forwarding to

  6. Save the settings and reboot the router if needed

Your device should now be reachable from outside your network.

Security tips

Opening ports can expose your devices to the wider internet, so it’s important to do it safely.

If you're not familiar with how port forwarding works or the risks involved, we recommend contacting our support team first. A misstep could leave your network vulnerable to hacking or data theft.

If you do proceed, keep these tips in mind:

  • Only open ports you actually need

  • Use strong passwords on any services you expose

  • Keep your devices and software updated

  • Disable or remove port rules when they’re no longer needed

  • Avoid forwarding access to sensitive devices like personal computers unless absolutely necessary

Important note on terms of use

Any use of port forwarding must comply with our Acceptable Use Policy and Standard Form of Agreement. You're responsible for keeping your service secure and must not run any service that could:

  • Disrupt other users

  • Expose the network to risk

  • Violate laws or third-party rights

Breaches may lead to service restriction, suspension, or disconnection.
