What speed should I be getting?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Your expected internet speed depends on your plan, how you’re connected, and when you’re testing. Here’s what to expect with a Splice Internet service over the Rural Fibre Co network.

Based on your plan

Under normal conditions, you should be getting speeds close to your plan’s maximum when connected via ethernet:

  • 50/20 — ~50 Mbps download / ~20 Mbps upload

  • 100/20 — ~100 Mbps download / ~20 Mbps upload

  • 500/500 — ~500 Mbps download / ~500 Mbps upload

  • 1000/1000 — ~1000 Mbps download / ~1000 Mbps upload

  • 2500/2500 — ~2500 Mbps download / ~2500 Mbps upload

Peak vs off-peak

  • On a fibre service, speeds should remain very close to your plan maximum even during peak periods.

  • Minor slowdowns may happen if your household has multiple high-demand activities at once (e.g. multiple 4K streams, gaming, and large uploads simultaneously).

  • If you're on a 50/20 or 100/20 plan, you may experience more performance issues when multiple devices are running simultaneously.

WiFi vs wired speeds

  • Wired (ethernet) connections give the most accurate measure of your plan speed.

  • WiFi speeds can vary depending on:

    • Distance from your router.

    • Walls, floors, and other obstructions.

    • Interference from other devices.

  • For the fastest and most consistent results, test on a device connected directly via ethernet.
